Stomach discomfort is a common urban disease that is often overlooked. Patients often tend to take it lightly and ignore it, which can ultimately lead to serious stomach diseases. If symptoms persist for a long time for no apparent reason, it may actually be related to Helicobacter pylori infection. As early as 1994, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization classified Helicobacter pylori as a Group 1 carcinogen, confirming its relationship with gastric cancer. It's difficult to predict whether Helicobacter pylori infection will develop into cancer. However, on the contrary, most gastric cancers are caused by H. pylori infection, leading to chronic gastritis and pathological changes in the stomach.

What are the common symptoms of H. pylori infection?

Most individuals infected with H. pylori are initially asymptomatic, and the infection may even go unnoticed for many years. The course of H. pylori infection is typically long, and symptoms will gradually appear.

  • Early infection:
In the early stages, patients may experience chronic gastritis, with symptoms such as stomachache, halitosis, and bloating.
  • Late infection:
Severe cases may develop gastrointestinal ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and gradually progress to stomach cancer. In addition to the aforementioned symptoms, anemia and black stool may also be potential manifestations.

Do not panic if you unfortunately get infected by the H. pylori infection. The treatment is quite simple. Patients shall see a doctor to receive a prescription for a 1–2 week triple therapy, which involves taking antibiotics.

How can you find out if you have experienced with H. pylori infection?

Due to the early symptoms being very similar to common gastrointestinal discomfort, and some carriers may not have any symptoms at all, it is necessary to identify the infection through testing (such as endoscopy, breath tests, etc.).
