Causes and Treatment

Causes:
A small amount of Candida is normally present in the female vagina. When the vaginal pH or hormone levels change—such as during pregnancy, with diabetes, reduced immunity, the use of antibiotics, or long-term use of steroids or immunosuppressants—it can alter the vaginal environment, leading to an overgrowth of Candida and resulting in vaginitis.
Treatment:
Use of vaginal suppositories and topical creams; if infections are recurrent, the doctor may prescribe oral medication.

Pathogen: Trichomonas vaginalis

Causes and Treatment

Causes:
It is a sexually transmitted infection. About 70% of people show no symptoms after infection; if symptoms occur, they usually appear within 5 to 28 days. Unsafe sex practices (like not using condoms) and having multiple partners increase the risk of infection.
Treatment:
Medication treatment; partners should be examined and treated at the same time; maintain personal hygiene and practice safe sex. Pathogen: Gardnerella vaginalis

Grayish-white discharge; usually odor is strong and "fishy"

Causes and Treatment

Causes:
Gardnerella is a naturally occurring vaginal bacterium. An imbalance can lead to its overgrowth and bacterial vaginosis. High-risk factors include using an IUD, vaginal douching, and having multiple sexual partners.
Treatment:
Take antibiotics, avoid vaginal douching, and practice safe sex.

Collect the sample by inserting a swab into the vagina

Place the swab back in the test device. Break the blue safety seal to release the buffer solution at the top of the device, keep the device upright and shake and mix the sample.

Will only one type of vaginitis occur at one time?

No. Many people may have more than one type of vaginitis at the same time, which is called mixed vaginitis. If you have mixed symptoms, you may have more than one vaginal infection and it is recommended that you perform this test to find the potential causes.​

If the test is negative, does that mean I don't have a vaginal infection?

If you have a negative test result for all three pathogens, it doesn't not mean you don't have a vaginal infection. It only means that your symptoms may not be caused by the three pathogens (Candida albicans, Trichomonas vaginitis, Gardnerella vaginalis). However, you may have another pathogen causing genital discomfort that is not one of these three pathogens.

Of which, trichomoniasis (caused by trichomonas vaginitis) is sexually transmitted. However, this test does not include detection of chlamydia, gonorrhoeic, HIV, syphilis, or Herpes.
