Japan Border Reopens! 2 Things You Can't Miss Before Entry
2022-11-7

Japan further lifts regulations on foreign tourists starting from October 11! Tourists can visit Japan without a visa and no longer need to go through a travel agency. Still, some of them must present a negative pre-departure PCR report while not all PCR tests are accepted by Japan. Check out the 2 criteria you can’t miss!
Vaccination and Pre-Departure PCR Test Requirements
Hong Kong travellers having received 3 doses of vaccines (incl. BioNTech & Sinovac) will be exempted from presenting a negative PCR test report within 72 hours of departure.
Those who have not completed 3 doses of vaccines or vaccinated with vaccines not recognized by Japan, must provide a negative PCR test report within 72 hours of departure.
Sample Requirements? Testing for Children Required?
Unvaccinated travellers should beware of the sampling methods of PCR tests recognized by Japan, including:
- Nasopharyngeal swab
- Nasal swab (only valid when the test is NAAT)
- Deep throat saliva
- Nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal (throat)
Besides, unvaccinated children under 18 accompanied by adults with full vaccination record are exempted from the above pre-departure testing measure.
In case the accompanying guardian does not hold a valid vaccination certificate and enters Japan with a negative certificate, preschool-aged children (generally under the age of 6) are not required a negative certificate.
